The IB Diploma Programme, for secondary school students, offers an academically challenging and balanced education with courses in six different subject groups in addition to three core elements – theory of Knowledge, extended Essay and creativity, action, service (CAS). The Diploma Programme is founded on a philosophy of building tolerance and understanding among internationally minded students of different cultures and backgrounds. The California Association of IB World Schools is authorized by the IB to offer Diploma teacher training workshops. Information regarding Language B and Sign Language

From: Judith Fabian, Chief Academic Officer, IBO

For sign languages: Any school (or even the schools association) is welcome to express a formal interest in having a sign language as language B by writing to sen@ibo.org

The information below is on the new language B course in the DP. I have written to Robin Oliver who raised the concerns, but there may be others who would find this information helpful:
For the language B written assignment at SL (which is the level affected by the resources issue):

  • We recognize that preparing students for the WA this year has required extraordinary efforts on the part of teachers and departments with large numbers of language B SL students; this was a primary factor in our decision to review this assessment component. The revised component will take effect for examinations in 2015, so there’s just one more year to ‘hang on’, so to speak
  • For 2014, teachers do not need to look for all new resources to prepare students for the WA; teachers are free to recycle sources once they are confident that they worked well for students in the 2013 cohort
  • One of the most tedious task administration procedures in submitting the WA has already been removed; this was communicated to DP Coordinators and posted on the OCC pages for language B in December 2012. So, teachers are no longer required to provide a description for each source, per student, on the cover sheet – a bibliographical reference will be sufficient
And for the ‘new’ cover sheet in language B (also the written assignment):
  • Cardiff staff discovered about 2 months ago that when the original language B cover sheets were created, no box for examiner marking was provided (perhaps this was due to confusion at the time of creating the forms about whether the WA would be e-marked)
  • These ‘old’ forms have been replaced with ‘new’ forms, which has generated confusion and frustration, especially for teachers who already had completed the ‘old’ forms
  • Certainly we apologize for this oversight. Schools already having completed the (old) forms may submit those without having to complete the ‘new’ forms as well. There is no need to re-do the forms, and the examiner will be given a separate form on which to record the marks.
  • Schools not yet having completed the forms are kindly asked to use the ‘new’ versions.
