Legislation Update - 09/13/2011

SB 532 (Hernandez) Signed by Governor Brown!

Governor Jerry Brown has signed SB 532 (Hernandez) into law. This bill did not receive a single “no” vote through the committee process and on both the Senate and Assembly Floors. The Assembly passed the bill with a vote of 74-0 and the final Senate vote was 37-0.

Overview of the legislation:

  • The legislature encourages the Academic Senates for the California Community Colleges, the California State University, and University of California to continue their efforts to adopt consistent system-wide guidelines for the acceptance and granting of credit for International Baccalaureate Diploma Program courses taken by students while they are in high school.
  • The bill requires the Superintendent of Public Instruction (SPI) to do several new tasks with regard to advanced placement and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, including: (1) update the California Department of Education's website annually with information, (2) inform high schools that offer advanced placement courses in fewer than five subjects of the options for making advanced placement courses and other rigorous courses available to pupils who may benefit from them, (3) provide support to high schools that offer International Baccalaureate courses.

The next step for CAWS is to draft a letter signed by the author, Senator Hernandez, and other willing Senators to encourage the Academic Senates to adopt consistent guidelines for accepting and awarding credit for International Baccalaureate courses.
