President Letter by Diana Cinati

Greetings IB Coordinators and Administrators,

Welcome to a new school year, one that will surely be filled with not only challenges, but also successes. Challenges have been a central part of our jobs as we have worked to overcome the budget crisis over the last few years. However, it is inspiring to me how despite the challenges, the IB educators in California continue to create success in their classrooms and at their schools. You are truly dedicated and amazing!

At our February conference, Bob Poole told us about IB’s push towards “Alternative Pathways” which asks school districts to recognize the IB Diploma as an “Alternative Pathway” to graduation. Desert Sands Unified School District is the first district in California to do this. We need other IB educators throughout the state to take this initiative to their districts. Who will be next? Please let me know if you would be willing to work with your district so that I can send you an outline of how it was achieved at DSUSD.

Your CAWS Board is honored to support IB students, teachers and schools. We have listened to our members and have discounted the dues and increased scholarships (information enclosed). We are also aware that only a small number of our schools are receiving state grant monies. With our state’s financial situation, it is highly unlikely that we will be able to secure state funding for additional schools. Thus, we are in the process of looking at corporate sponsors to support California IB schools. We are excited about this, but there is work to be done. We hope to have more information to share at our October meeting.

As the International Baccalaureate continues to grow and change, so does CAWS. We have added additional board members in the past few years and this year we will be actively seeking members who are passionate about IB to fill the positions of Treasurer, Vice President and Member At-Large. We will be voting on these positions at our February meeting. If you are interested, please email me or Steve Rockenbach,

As you begin the new school year, remember that the work you do is important not only for your students, but also for the future.
