August Newsletter by Pat Prather

Coordinators and Administrators

How fast the summer months pass! School seems to start earlier and earlier. August, which used to mean only one more month of vacation left, now signals the beginning of another school year. Well, it’s time to go back and welcome all your students It’s time once again to encourage them to commit to excellence, and seize every opportunity to learn and think toward the future. Welcome back! Celebrate every new day!

CAWS welcomes one new member to the Board of Directors. Karen Huffines, Principal of Sierra Elementary School in Rocklin CA, has assumed the position of PYP Representative. She replaces Anne Evans, who has served the board with dedication and loyalty for so many years. Thanks to Anne and congratulations to Karen!

Your Association is going green as much as possible. There will be no more mailing of documents to schools. Everything will be posted on the website including dues notices, scholarship applications, registrations for our Fall Forum and Spring Seminar. In order not to miss deadlines, updates on legislation, news from IBA, and to stay current on all developments, dates, and upcoming events in CAWS, check the website regularly. We will continue to send out e-blasts when the need arises.

Sheraton Grand Hotel, Sacramento, CA

We are delighted that Dr. David Conley, Chief Executive of the Educational Policy Improvement Center, and consultant on the Common Core and IB Standards has agreed to address our participants at the Fall Forum on IB: Preparing Students for College, Careers, and the Common Core. The focus for each of the three breakout sessions will be “Core Traits”– inquiry, critical thinking, analysis - into ALL subjects, and a final wrap-up on what makes great teaching in the IB and the Common Core. Dr. Conley’s bio and photo are on the website for your information. Online registration will be available on the CAWS website by mid-August

Plans still are not set yet for this event. The location will be in San Diego most likely at the Horton Grand at the end of February. My developing thoughts are to run three different strands, DP, MYP, PYP, during the day, each one devoted to new developments current to each programme. This agenda should be finalized within the next month. Stay tuned and check the website for more details.

Start making plans to register for our summer 2014 TTW’s in Granlibakken! There was an excellent turnout for DP/MYP/PYP offerings this year and participants had a great time working with colleagues from schools around the globe. They also enjoyed outdoor patio dining with delectable meals every day prepared by the incomparable chef from Granlibakken. The dates for our workshops in 2014 are identical to 2013 – DIPLOMA June 25-28 and MYP/PYP June 28-July 1. Our approved course offerings are on the CAWS website. Online registration for the 2014 workshops will be available on our website October 7. Start checking for these details in early September.

Any School interested in hosting a roundtable please contact me. Roundtables are a great way to share best practices and to make connections with colleagues from other schools. CAWS pays a school $500 for hosting.

Legislative updates are provided to CAWS by Barrett Snider of the advocacy firm, Capitol Advisors Group LLD and are posted on our website. October 29th, 2013, the day after our Fall Forum, several members of the CAWS Board plan to meet with legislators in Sacramento to continue our dialogue regarding recognition and funding for IB schools. in California. How many of you have contacted your local legislator to come and see your program? Help us to get the word out about the great work that takes place in your school and what makes the IB so special to students and their futures.

Authorized IB schools in California become members of CAWS by paying their yearly dues. These monies support the Association which is dedicated to the interests and needs of your IB World School and program. Your dues entitle you to a $50 discount on your registrations to our bi-annual conferences. They help to provide monies for our CAWS yearly scholarships for which only dues-paying member schools can apply. Schools that have paid their 2012-13 dues are listed with an asterisk by their name on our schools section of the website. Dues have been restructured by the Board this year to ensure a more uniform payment policy for all schools. The CAWS treasurer’s letter and dues invoice is on the website. Download it and submit your payment to Tom Krucli by the October 15 deadline.

Scholarship applications will be on the website at the end of August. The due date has been changed to January 6th to allow more schools time to participate. Become active! Submit applications to help your students and your school!
