Salomon Zavala

Salomon is the son of immigrant parents from Mexico. He was raised in South Central Los Angeles and graduated from a public high school. Salomon graduated with honors from Amherst College in Massachusetts in 2001, where he received a Bachelor Degree in Sociology, with an emphasis on social inequality. Salomon went on to attend the University of California at Berkeley, School of Law Boalt Hall, where he received a Juris Doctorate Degree in 2005.

Salomon is currently General Counsel for Semillas Sociedad Civil, a community-based California nonprofit public benefit organization, dedicated to educational excellence, an appreciation of the cultural and intellectual heritage of Native American Peoples, and the promotion of positive social awareness. In 2001, Semillas founded its first charter school campus, Academia Semillas del Pueblo Charter School ("Academia"), a successful and highly innovative community-based k – 8 public charter school for the children of East Los Angeles.

"Academia" is seeking to become the first IB World School in East Los Angeles, and is currently the only International Baccalaureate Candidate School in Los Angeles. Semillas aims to develop a network of community-based charter schools from kinder through 12th grade that share an Indigenous Culture and an International Curriculum. After opening the first campus in 2002, Semillas will be opening a charter high school in September 2008, Anahuacalmecac International University Preparatory High School of North America.
